IN-[TRAN(SIT]U)

Books, Exhibition, Installation, Tags, Motion
Feb–Apr 2024
A liminal space refers to a space between spaces. It’s a space full of emotions and ambiguity as one leaves the past and awaits for the unknown future. An airport is the epitome of a liminal space as it physically and emotionally transits a person from one place to another. Just as one packs and leaves behind items when they travel, one also has memories they carry and leave behind when transitioning from one emotional state to the next.

IN-[TRAN(SIT]U) explores the airport experience as a metaphor for life transitions. The meticulous process of going through an airport reflects the complex emotional process one goes through during a life transition. Ultimately, I hope people can embrace the process of transitions while staying true to themselves throughout the changes. IN-[TRAN(SIT]U) create a moment for people to check in and record how they are feeling. Objects can tell stories so I invented a system of looking at transitions through the lens of objects. Just like how I reflect on my transitions through this project, I hope people can do the same and be proud of how far they have come.

Deliverable 1
Identity IN-[TRAN(SIT]U)

Vellum Accordion Book
I wanted to explore how changes can be seen through the lens of objects. This booklet portrays the major transitions I experienced throughout my life through my identifications. The IDs include a registration card, green card, VISA, school ID, and driver’s license. I made it the same size as a passport. Each ID represents a period of my life and the change I went through during that period. I included specifics of each change and the smaller steps I took to get there. The IDs and the titles are on the folds of the book. When it’s folded, you can see half of each life period and everything in between is the changes I went through.

Deliverable 2
What Changed You?

Interactive Installation, Tags, Lasercut Acrylic, Vinyl
This installation allows people to write what changed them on a luggage tag. The whole installation is contained within luggage because it is often associated with transitions. People use it when they are going through an important life transition such as moving to a different city. After writing on the tag, you have the option to hang it on the luggage with a zip tie if you’re glad the change happened or put it in the luggage if you regret it. By participating, people can reflect on the changes they went through and realize how far they have come. By writing down with a sharpie, they are permanently recording the changes. Participants can also go through what others wrote. When you see people who went through similar changes, it makes you less alone.

Deliverable 3
CHECK-IN-[TRAN(SIT]U)

Photoframe, Lasercut Acrylic, Chalk marker
An important step while going through transitions is to check-in with yourself. This activity creates a moment for people to take a breath and think about how they are feeling. College students at the end of the semester are so busy and stressed. I went around and stopped people from what they’re doing to do this activity. This allows them to reflect on what they did and be more attuned to their emotions. Many things these days are digitalized so physically making people write with a marker gives them a few minutes off screen. People often look back at their pictures to see their changes. By taking a picture of each person holding the frame, I capture a moment of them in liminality.

Deliverable 4
IN-[TRAN(SIT]U) Title Sequence

Motion Video
I combined the results of the photo-frame and luggage tags into a motion piece. I overlayed the motion of IN-TRANSIT changing into IN-SITU which goes into a loop of N flipping to U. The movement and the inverted style resembles the baggages going through airport security.

Deliverable 5
Thesis Book

Book
Editorial
This book consist of three chapters: Check-In, Security, and Depart which resembles the process of going through an airport. Check-In includes my past works and experiences that lead me to this thesis topic. Security includes the research and experiments I did for thesis. Depart includes all the deliverables and results for IN-[TRAN(SIT]U). I used an arrow to represent each chapter and the layout of the contents of each chapter follows each arrow.
